Ep 4: Sowmya Murthy ◆ Chief Marketing Officer, Seven Lake Technologies

Sowmya Murthy is the Chief Marketing Officer {CMO} for Seven Lake Technologies, a challenger brand in the big data technology space. Sowmya is also the creator of The Soul Quotient, an incubator for alpha women that teaches them how to activate their intuition.

In this episode, we discuss…

  • What creating an environment where it's safe to fail looks like in action.
  • Why she believes sponsorship > mentorship.
  • How to lean into your emotional intelligence and intuition, even if you are in a ultra-alpha environment.
  • How an ex-boyfriend helped her realized how much she had become mainstream white in her culture, and what she did about it.

The Path: How Sowmya Did It

Her skillz

As Sowmya’s career progressed, the skills she developed to be successful in those roles include: how to size markets ◆ how to speak to serve ◆ truly understanding the financials of a business ◆ nurturing relationships ◆ feeling the energy in a room ◆ financial modeling ◆ defining problems ◆ emotional intelligence ◆ evangelism.

Career advice to her younger self

Stop leaving your body, keep going back into it. You cannot exercise your power (in business), if you aren’t in your body.

My Thoughts After the Conversation

More, please

A lot of Sowmya's big life decisions (where she went to college, what job she took) were made in consideration of her parents. She knew she would be the primary caregiver of them, so she needed to be in close proximity to them. I wish I would have asked her more about this.

What I learned

Sowmya was born in Bangalore, India, and moved to the US when she was 16. She got rid of her accent by watching a lot of Nick At Night.

Up-level your game

Sowmya learned about structured curiosity when she became a consultant and had to interview clients in order to help them solve their business challenges. If you consider a lack of curiosity a flatside, check out the book Curious by Ian Leslie (see “Mentioned in the Episode” section below for more info).

A very intuitive discussion and excellent presentation. It illustrates as to how a LAMP burns always to give light
to others, without making it obvious.

Thank you. I love the LAMP reference, Sowmya is definitely a light to others!

What a great interview – fantastic job on both ends of the conversation. The personal, professional, emotional, and spiritual growth I’ve seen in Sowmya over the past few years having the opportunity to work with her has been incredible. She’s an inspiration to many, so great to see her and hear her message and words on this podcast.

Thank you for the kind words, I had a blast interviewing Sowmya! If I had not attended your Fitness Academy at WDS this summer, I’m not sure if Sowmya and I would have re-connected, and our friendship and this conversation would not likely exist. So THANK YOU!
